These unusual perennials bloom at a time when most plants are still hibernating, usually midwinter in mild climates and late winter or early spring in areas where the ground freezes hard.  All require moist, highly organic, well-draining alkaline soil.  They are sometimes slow to establish, but are long-lived, preferring not to be disturbed.
