These interesting, clump-forming, top-rooted plants add a new dimension to the flower border.  Cone-shaped or rounded flowers are surrounded by stiff, spiny, petal-like structures called bracts.  Leaves are also spiny.  They make excellent cutflowers, both fresh and dried.  Tolerant to drought and salt.  Seldom needs division.  Plant in average soil that's very well-drained.
