The mere mention of the name "Gentian" conjures up images of shades of blue.  They're wonderful additions to the rock garden or flower border, lovely intermingled with fall blooming crocus and colchicum.  Plant them in evenly moist, rich soil that's well-drained.  They like full sun, but need protection from afternoon sun in hot climates.  Division is seldom needed.
